An idea that takes root & makes waves
The start as a hobby project
What began in 2020 as the passion of a few friends in Munich quickly became more than a hobby.
Driven by curiosity and the desire to contribute to sustainable food production and self-sufficiency, we invested countless hours in building our own aquaponics system.
A lot of tinkering, crafting, and trying things out took place, from fine-tuning the water chemistry to selecting the perfect plants and fish species.
At some point it was clear that the project worked not only in theory but also in practice.
A vibrant, functioning ecosystem emerged, which fascinated and strengthened us to continue.
A decision for the common good
The project, which grew more and more over time, soon reached a critical point.
As it was now producing impressive amounts of fresh vegetables and fish, the project became too big for a simple hobby and required more time and capital.
At the same time, it was too small to secure a livelihood on its own. We were faced with the question of how best to realize our vision.
Our answer was: in the service of the community.
We consciously decided against a purely profit-oriented company in order to live our values.
The aquaponics philosophy was not meant to become an end in itself, but to be made accessible as a sustainable alternative for everyone.
The decision was made to transfer the project into a non-profit structure dedicated to our mission.
UrbanTide becomes part of the Rain Or Shine Foundation
In the Rain Or Shine Foundation, a local non-profit foundation, we have found the ideal partner.
This partnership allows us to operate under an experienced umbrella and fully concentrate on our goals: the further development of aquaponics, education, and local food production.
The foundation offers us not only a legal framework, but also a platform to build trust with donors and partners.
UrbanTide is now the lighthouse project of this foundation, and we are proud to implement our vision together with it.
